Last month at Mobile World Congress (MWC) event in Barcelona, Spain Samsung announced its latest flagship smartphone, the Galaxy S6, along with a curved edition named S6 edge. At the same time the company confirmed that it would be releasing a new version of its Gear VR smartphone-based virtual reality (VR) head-mounted display (HMD) to accommodate the new phones. This week as seen the company finally announce a release date for the new device.
Gear VR for S6 will be launching in the USA on 8th May 2015. Pre-order campaigns are launching today via BestBuy.com, with the kit also becoming available over on Samsung.com on launch day. The device will also be available from selected physical Best Buy stores on 15th May, with demo pods also appearing at these locations.
The new version of Gear VR is largely the same as the original that supports the Galaxy Note 4 enlarged handset, although the smaller size of the S6 does allow the HMD itself to shrink slightly. The kit even keeps the same ‘Innovator Edition’ branding as the original. Oculus VR is expected to launch a new, consumer-focused version of the device later on in 2015.
GearVR.uk will continue to follow all of the latest updates on the Gear VR, reporting back with the latest updates on the device.
