AltspaceVR the virtual reality (VR) platform designed for communication and social interaction for the Oculus Rift head-mounted display (HMD) is now coming to the Gear VR HMD.
Unveiled at a VR press conference this week, AltspaceVR’s CEO, Eric Romo, made the presentation via an Oculus Rift with a Kinect back at the company’s offices in Mountain View, reports UploadVR.com.
Romo’s presentation demonstrated the functionality of the GearVR version, showcasing shared browser feed and shared video playback to the invitees. The demo that guests experienced had no user interface, but were informed that in the final version it would be included, and it would resemble the desktop version, albeit with a small reduction in graphical performance.
“Being cross-platform has been a consistent request from our users, and we understand why,“ said Romo in a statement. “Some people will choose a desktop PC-based experience, and others will prefer mobile VR, but both groups should be able to interact and feel like they’re in the same place with AltspaceVR, without compromise.”
The AltspaceVR version for Gear VR isn’t yet available, but a closed alpha will be starting soon, with those interested being able to sign up here.
GearVR.uk will continue to follow all the latest news and announcements for the GearVR and will report back.
